Phangnga _ Maklua, a four-year-old army dog, sniffed a stack of weed washed up by tidal waves, walked in a circle and suddenly began digging.

Rescuers searched the area immediately and found a large piece of head skin with hair. The dog was told to continue searching. A few minutes later, it found a decomposed body of a man in a marine police uniform under a thick pile of weed.

Maklua, Makok, and Bua Daeng, are the first batch of army dogs sent to help search for tsunami victims in Phangnga's Takua Pa district.

The dogs, trained by the Royal Thai Army's veterinary department in Nakhon Ratchasima, arrived by plane yesterday morning.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.said he asked the navy to send the dogs to help in the recovery operation after His Majesty the King told him during a recent audience that indigenous dogs are good at sniffing things out, particularly in mangrove forests.

Maklua specialises in searching for bomb parcels while Makok, 4, and Bua Daeng, 5, are experts in drug searching.

``This is the first time the dogs have been told to search for bodies and they are doing a good job,'' said Capt Putthapong Chaengsuk, chief of the operation, which ends on Monday.

The dogs were also found to be a good companion to elephants, which have been sent from Ayutthaya elephant shelter to join the clean-up as well.

The dogs find the scent first, before elephants come in to move heavy materials to open the area for rescuers.

The dog-elephant searching team yesterday discovered two dead tsunami victims at Ban Bang Niang, one of the hardest-hit areas. Rescuers have collected more than 30 bodies around the area in the past 11 days.

Capt Putthapong said the army's dog training project was started by His Majesty, who suggested the army collect stray dogs around Bangkok and train them for military tasks.

He said 50 stray dogs had been trained last year, in courses which took six months. Maklua, Makok, and Bua Daeng were among 42 dogs that passed the test.

Capt Putthapong said the three dogs were sent to Takua Pa because the others were busy with other jobs.

The dogs also provided security at the Apec summit in Bangkok. But they are here not just to find victims, but also to improve their performance. ``Experience in the field is crucial to develop searching ability,'' Capt Putthapong said.

Si habeis visto el telediario a dia de hoy, un grupo de elefantes de rescate estaban entrenados para la busqueda y señalizacion de personas sepultadas, a traves del olor, al igual que los perros;
